Latch Back Earrings
This is part of the fourth project from Stage 8 of the Apprentice program at Jewellery Training Solutions, a stage dedicated to learning advanced cutting skills and advanced setting construction. This lesson is comprised of six different projects, a pair of earring and different types of clasps. I’m very excited to learn how to make this type of earring, since many people prefer not to wear earwires since they aren’t as secure. This type of earring is often set with stones, and I can’t wait until I learn those skills!
What were the challenges?
One challenge I had while making these earrings was understanding the shape of the latch. Also, working with the very small pieces of tubing and getting them in exactly the right place was difficult.
Where could I improve?
Because it took me a bit to understand the shape of the latch, I drilled the hole for the post a bit too low - after getting it done I realized the shape was wrong. However, luckily I was able to adjust things so that it latches securely. Next time I will definitely be able to make the latch system work even better. One other issue I had was that I misplaced the seam of one of the pieces of tubing so that it was exposed and came open during the soldering process.
What did I learn?
This was great hinge making practice. Since they are so small and there is no room for error, you have to truly understand how to make them. I also learned how this latch mechanism works - simple but effective.
