Motherhood Mandala

Motherhood Mandala

This is the first mandala I made in silver, and also one of the first ones I drew. During the process, I was amazed at the powerful feelings it evoked. I did not enter in to the design process with any intentions, and it resulted in something very powerful. That is the power of mandalas, to connect with your inner self.

This mandala evokes feelings of my life as a mother. It starts with emptiness, prior to life with my children. Times of loneliness, yet times of joy emanating from this space as I begin to raise my family. As they grow, eyes everywhere, trying to keep them safe. And then as they begin to leave and fly on their own, holes left behind. Places of emptiness. But those will transition to something else.

I think this mandala came to be because I’m at a point where I’m feeling intense loneliness as my children begin to leave the nest. It’s definitely a time of great transition. I’ve had a lot of time to contemplate, to think about the past 25 years. I’ve been far from perfect, and wish I could change so many things, but my kids have truly been my greatest accomplishment and my greatest joy.
