Tube Link Chain and Sister Clasp
These are projects 4 and 5 in Stage 2 of the Silver Program at Jewellery Training Solutions. I am loving the progression of these projects and how much I’m learning with each one of them. Since these projects go together, I decided that I would present them together in one post.
What were the challenges?
The biggest challenge that I had with this project is drilling the pilot holes in the tubes. It was especially challenging since I used tubing that was about half the size of what was recommended since that’s what I had on hand in copper and I didn’t want to make tubing for this project. I’ve also been challenging myself to use hard solder wherever possible - in the past I’ve often used easy solder for chains.
Where could I improve?
Finishing is still an issue, especially removing all of the marks on the small sections of tube and the photos of the clasp make it clear that I could have done better. I really spent a lot of time polishing this one, though, so it’s improved over the last one. Also, some of the holes aren’t exactly lined up - the precision could be improved on.
What did I learn?
This project was great practice in slightly adjusting the position of holes as they are being drilled. I also learned how to create a sister hook in any size - in the past I’ve only made them from a pre-designed pattern.
