Basic Four Claw Ring

Basic Four Claw Ring

This is the fourth project in Stage 4 of the Silver Program at Jewellery Training Solutions. This is a standard ring design that I was very excited to learn how to make. It definitely presented some unexpected challenges! I think it took at least eight times of remaking the setting before I got it even close to being right.

What were the challenges?

Because the shank is shaped in two different directions, it was very difficult to determine the length needed to get a specific ring size. Then, there was the setting. This one was challenged me more than any other project thus far. I had trouble forming the tapered bezel, getting it to the right size. Then, I made a number of stupid mistakes, including removing the posts instead of the material between the posts.

Where could I improve?

I think it would be better if the prongs were a little bit taller. Also, I need to improve the shaping between the prongs.

What did I learn?

I learned tons with this project. I finally understand how to make a tapered bezel from flat stock, and make it the correct size. I also understand how to make the claw setting, and I have a much better understanding of how to cut the seat for the stone. Also, this is the first time I got to use my new ring bender!
