Trigger Clasp
This is part of the fourth project from Stage 8 of the Apprentice program at Jewellery Training Solutions, a stage dedicated to learning advanced cutting skills and advanced setting construction. I was really looking forward to learning how to make these various clasps, but this one just about did me in! However, I refuse to cry, “Uncle,” and finally managed to get a clasp that works beautifully.
What were the challenges?
This was a challenging project overall, but by far the hardest part is to get the trigger to work correctly, and to get it in place with the spring. The first try was a pretty dismal failure, but I understood it better the second time around. These projects are very challenging since there aren’t specific instructions given - there is a wonderful video demonstration, but it’s up to us to figure out exactly how the trigger mechanism is going to fit.
Where could I improve?
The clasp closes with an audible click (always exciting) but it is pretty difficult to open. I’m at a loss as to how to adjust it so it is easier to work. It fits together very well. There are little “flaps” that get closed after the mechanism is put into place, and those are not as hidden as I would like, and a couple of the seams are slightly showing. Also, the outer housing should have been just a hair longer.
What did I learn?
Well, as always, I learned tons. I understand how this mechanism works, and I understand how to create the box shape. I love using the wide, flat jump rings - they are so much easier to solder on!
